Chematich Location Chief David Rono has urged parents from the area to protect their school-going children from being attacked by rogue elephants that have invaded the area.
Speaking on Wednesday at Chematich Shopping Centre, Kiptororo Ward in Rongai North during a public baraza, Rono expressed concern over the jumbos that have invaded the area.
“Chematich has been invaded by elephants and I urge parents to take care of their children. Parents should accompany their children to school to protect them,” said Rono.
Rono noted that over 20 rogue elephants from neighbouring Baringo County have invaded the area and are wreaking havoc.
“An estimated 1,000 acres of land under maize plantation are at risk of being destroyed by elephants,” said Rono.
The administrator added that the elephants are causing panic among the local residents.
“Some residents are unable to go on with their daily activities for fear of being attacked by the elephants,” said Rono.
Rono urged the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to intervene to end the human-wildlife conflict.
“KWS should move swiftly and force the elephants to national parks to avert loss of life and property,” said Rono.
He however urged the locals not to kill the jumbos as it is against the law and leave the matter to the concerned authorities.
