The Director of Elimu Academy in Kisii town, Hellen Kombo, has faulted the government for being biased in waiving the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education(KCPE) examination registration fees for only candidates from public primary schools leaving out their counterparts from private schools.
Ms. Kombo challenged the government through the education CS, Fred Matiang'i, to consider waiving national examination registration fees for all KCPE candidates without discrimination against those from the private schools.
Speaking at the School grounds on Thursday evening during the School's thanksgiving ceremony for the 2015 KCPE candidates' best performance, Kombo reminded the government that despite being privately-owned, children from those schools enjoy equal rights as their counterparts in public schools since they are all children of Kenya whose rights should be catered for by the government.
"I am reminding the Kenyan government that when it comes to the education of children, there is no private and public child. It is wrong for the government to sideline children from private schools from enjoying the examination registration fees waiver which is meant to relief the parents of the burden of paying examination registration fees for their children," stated Ms. Kombo.
She clarified that the issue of having children learning in private schools does not warrant the government to isolate them from enjoying examination registration fees waiver extended by the Government to their counterparts in public schools. Her sentiments were echoed by Magenche Ward MCA of Kisii, Timothy Ogugu, who said it was discriminative of the government to profile Kenyan children based on their schooling status as it deprived them of their constitutional right of enjoying Government support in their education.
