Solai residents have been urged to embrace and practice community policing to fight theft and other crimes in the community.
Speaking after the recovery of stolen cows from Marigu village, the area chief Simon Mwangi Murage urged the residents to report any suspects to the police.
“With the help of good village men and women from Marigu, we were able to return the stolen cows. I request all Solai community to be of help when crises occur,” urged chief Murage.
A police officer involved in the recovery said: “The stolen cows were recovered at Kabazi area in Subukia sub-county tied to a tree. The suspect ran away after realising he was being followed. He however could not escape after his colleague, who operates a bodaboda business, informed the chief leading to his arrest.”
Last week, a herd of 38 cows were stolen at night from a renowned farmer recognised by the residents as Bomet. The cows were ferried using a lorry which was not recognised and recovery efforts are still ongoing.
“We are always worried when it nears Christmas season. We are forced to spend sleepless nights to protect our animals,” says Maria Wamuyu a resident from Munanda village.
Most of the farmers have opted to construct permanent sheds for their cattle as a measure of increasing security. The geographical position of Solai makes recovery of stolen animals hard as the thieves may use Kisanana – Baringo route, lower Solai Subukia or Mogotio.
