Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has challenged the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) to call off mass action and instead dialogue with the various stakeholders on the contentious elections laws.
Speaking on Sunday shortly after attending a church service at Our Lady of Consolata Catholic Cathedral church in Nyeri town, the governor warned that countrywide demonstrations in protest against the laws would plunge the nation into violence just seven months to the August polls.
“The contentious issues are matters of law that can be debated and agreed upon without mass action that can lead to destructions of property and destabilising peace in the country,” he said.
Both the National Assembly and the Senate adopted changes to the Elections (Amendment) Laws Bill.
The changes include a manual backup system for voter identification and results transmission which were firmly rejected by Cord legislators.
