Residents of Kisumu County living along Lake Victoria Basin have been urged to embrace horticultural farming.
County Governor Jack Ranguma says there is abundant water supply along the lake that has not been fully utilised.
Ranguma said Kisumu city continue to be an importer of horticultural produce especially onions, vegetables and tomatoes from other counties.
He said the county has the potential to produce its own horticultural produce for consumption and export to other areas.
“A lot of our money is leaving the county to purchase horticultural produce from other counties yet we have the capacity to produce the same here,” he said.
Speaking after touring projects in Kisumu West Constituency, Ranguma urged the youth not to be pre-occupied with white collar jobs but to venture into farming.
He said money is in the soil and the locals must be ready to toil to reap the benefits of farming.
“Our people should know that farming really pays and it needs dedication, there is a lot of money in farming,” he said.
Ranguma said his government is keen to support women and youth groups who are keen to carry out farming as a project.
