Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria has urged Gatundu residents to embrace farming especially this year to avoid starvation and hunger.
The legislator who visited one of the farms in Gatundu on Friday held a sensitisation meeting with farmers to mentor them on importance of farming in the region and to the economy of the country.
Kuria has expressed his concerns about people who steal farm produce from the hardworking farmers adding that such behaviours will never be tolerated.
He said that agriculture is the main economic activity in the country and urged farmers from Gatundu to be aggressive in farming to help avoid future shortage of food in the county.
Kuria issued a stern warning to those who have a tendency of stealing farm produce from farmers urging the community to work hand in hand with the authority to tame them and be prosecuted in the court of law.
This comes after residents complained about theft of farm produce by unknown people in the area and had called for intervention by the county government.
“Those lazy criminals who steal from farmers, their days are numbered. I urge you to stop that unbecoming behavior before they find themselves in courts,” warned Kuria.
He however challenged some few residents who do not like farming, but wait to buy from other farmers that they should contribute to the economic growth of not only Gatundu South but also that of Kiambu County.
The MP revealed that plans are ongoing to supply the farmers with fertilisers to upgrade their soil to produce quality and quantity products.
“Fertilisers will be supplied very soon to farmers to boost their farming and have plenty supply and stock of enough food in our homesteads,” said Kuria.
Kuria urged the farmers to practice other types of farming like poultry, rabbit rearing and bee keeping which, he claimed have high demands in markets.
The MP lauded young farmers who make a living on farm produce saying it takes determination and consistency in practicing farming.
