According to former Kitutu Masaba constituency MP Mwancha Okioma, farming has been the backbone of the region for long and there is need for improved methods to increase production.

Speaking at Nyakoe on Monday morning when he opened a school workshop, the former legislator further urged youths to involve themselves with farming.

Okioma further blamed the low food harvest in Kisii and Nyamira Counties on soil exhaust, and the belief to invest in one type of farming.

“Farmers should be synthesised regularly on ways to improve their farming by the best achievers in the same field,” said Okioma.

He further advised the farmers to embrace mixed and livestock farming to increase production.

The former legislator noted that regulations should be made to curb brokers who steal from farmers in the export market by selling tea to brokers.

”It is irritating that after long tea-picking from farmers, there are some factories through Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) who have employed the exploitation character to farmers by interfering with the cost,” said Okioma.

The tea farming is vital in Kisii and many factories are operational to serve the agency and the public at large in ensuring there are equitable distribution of products made.
