Sagwe also noted that it is important to practice crop rotation by planting the soya crop, since this will help fight against Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease (MLND) in the county.

Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of the programme at Kenyenya in Bokimonge Ward, Bomachoge Borabu Sub County, Sagwe noted that farmers should not worry because the crop has a ready market unlike in the past, whereby he indicated that a farmer can make an average profit of Sh 40, 000 from one acre.

"The crop is important because it will help fight against the maize disease. The predicament will not end unless crop rotation is exercised," said Sagwe.

He added, “The crop is also important since it can boost the economic standards of Kisii county residents.”

Bokimonge Ward MCA George Bibao, advised residents to take the crop serious to enable them educate their children.

"I ask residents to embrace the crop so that they can generate income to enable them educate their children," said Bibao.

On the other hand, the minister asked farmers to take advantage of the rain season and plant short-term crops, so that they can contain the looming hunger.

More than 6, 000 farmers have registered and started the faming of soya, and the minister has since encouraged more to embrace the activity.

Among the private investors who have an MoU with the Kisii County Government and promised to see that farmers get sensitised on the importance of the crop are Commercial Bank, Trans National Bank and MEA among others.
