The fear of childbearing and facing the wrath of parents raises goosebumps in majority of the youth around Thika sub-County.

Jonah Mwangi, Kiambu County health CeC condemns the outcome statistics that condoms do not sell as much as emergency pills which are on high demand. He claims that the youth are risking their lives.

The statistics shows that most of Kiambu county youth do not use protection and this is proven by how condoms, both male and female, sell at a slower pace compared to emergency pills.

According to the CeC, the county government of Kiambu has been giving condoms in public places like hospitals and government offices but they move at a slower rate.

“It is shocking that the youth do not protect themselves and instead they go for the pills which when used regularly at a tender age may have negative impacts on their reproductive systems,” Mwangi said.

“They should consult a physician for the appropriate contraceptives to use than taking emergency pills. That is why they are for emergency purposes,” he insisted.

Philomena Kimani, one of the owners of a pharmacy in Thika town explained that the stock of emergency pills if not refilled cannot last for a week.

She says that the pills can keep her outlet going even if other drugs are out of stock.
