There were emotions and cries at Lushangonyi village in Mghange ward in Taita Taveta during the funeral ceremony of Sabina Mkanjala 71, old grandmother who died after she was raped twice by unknown gangsters at her home in different days.

According to Ms. Geraldine Mwandoe- the daughter, she was called that sad evening, that her mother was found lying down unconscious at her door before rushing home where she took her to Wesu hospital for a checkup.

"On arrival at Wesu hospital I was shocked to realize that my mother was missing her underwear, I was forced to ask the doctors to diagnose her mother's private parts where they found semen- a sign of rape," said Mwandoe.

She was given HIV/AIDs drugs after realizing the rapist was HIV victim before being admitted until the following day where she was referred to Coast General where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Ms. Irene Wawuda, a member of Sauti ya Wanawake from Lushangonyi expressed her disappointments of increasing deaths of old women and young girls over raped in Lushangonyi saying its 5th incident within 8 months.

"Lack of vehicle, rescue center and funding of Sauti ya Wanawake as a group which has been dealing with gender-based violence cases is a major challenge for saving many lives and also ensuring they get the culprit," Said Wawuda.

Again, Ms. Jackline Mnjala the Secretary to Taita women professionals who happened to greatly support the family during the incident condemned the barbaric act of raping young girls and grandmothers calling on the intervention of all stakeholders to up their game for justice of the victims. 

She also suggested castration of any suspect found guilty of rape referring to old traditional days.

The County government has issued a stern warning to the culprit saying it will work with all stakeholders and leaders in ending the vice by ensuring justice has prevailed.
