The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Eldoret West Branch Kipchumba Arusei has urged the government to employ more teachers for free secondary school education to be successful.
He said the current number of teachers is a drop in the ocean and cannot satisfy the increasing number of students.
“As a union, we are not happy with the way the Jubilee government is handling the free secondary education without employing more teachers, how they expect our children to be taught with the current deficit of teachers being experienced,” he said in Eldoret town, Friday.
“We want the government to at least to employ 20,000 secondary school teachers and 10,000 primary teachers to bridge this gap. If we are not careful we will have a teacher to student ratio of 1:60,” he added.
He reiterated that if the national government will not address the teacher’s shortage they will go on strike for more teachers to be employed.
“We are tired of empty promises and the national government should act at speed before things get out of hand. We want our students to get quality and not quantity education,” noted Arusei.
