Kerio River breath taking Devil Divers now wants both the county and national governments to recognize them for employment opportunities.
The divers, who claim to be an important factor for tourist attraction in Baringoand Elgeyo-Marakwet counties, wants their contributions rewarded.
“Jumping from a cliff of over 70 metres into the river full of crocodiles is not an easy task and takes a lot of experience and skills.” Says John Kipsang.
The divers are always an attraction site for tourists especially those plying Kabarnet-Eldoret Town, who would pay anything to see them dive from the cliff into the running river.
The County government of Baringo had earlier on banned the diving practices after one of the divers lost his life.
“We would really appreciate should the county government offer us employment like one of our brothers who secured a job with Kenya Navy last year.” Says Kip Kiprotich.
They also claim tourists are making a fortune of their efforts by taking photos and videos during diving.
An elder, Arap Mutai from Ainamoi area says the youth have no employment and source of income and as a result take advantage of diving from the cliff which is says is very dangerous.
