A senator allied to the National Super Alliance (NASA) has called upon the national government to increase its financial support to the county governments if the cutthroat competition for the presidency is to be contained.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Wednesday, Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr said that it was evident many Kenyans still hold the belief that occupying the presidency was the only way to their economic empowerment even after the county governments came into place in 2013.

" If we are to do away with this cutthroat competition then we must ensure that our counties are financially empowered because a majority of Kenyans still hold the presidency so dear to their hearts. They believe it is their only way to economic empowerment.

His comments come in the wake of a near standoff between the two main parties in the country, NASA, and Jubilee over the recent repeat presidential elections that threatens to tear the country right in the middle.

While Nasa has dismissed the elections that saw president Uhuru Kenyatta as sham, Jubilee, on the other hand, has welcomed the victory and urged their rivals to seek redress in court
