More than thirty primary schools in Kisii County will benefit from free sanitary towels courtesy of the National government in association with an NGO called Africa for Development.

This follows the delivery of 390 cartons constituting 315, 900 sanitary pads at the county’s education headquarters on Tuesday.

Suneka sub county education Officer,  Biliah Nyasani received the donations on behalf of the girls before handing over the pads to the various school heads who collected the same on behalf of the girls.

Biliah thanked the government as well as the Africa for Development the donation and said that will be so helpful and this will raise the level playground in their academic pursuit.

The Officer observed that the girls will now be in a position to handle the challenges that are unique to their gender saying this would impact positively in regard to their attendance and retention in schools.

In a speech read on her behalf of Africa for development President, Doug Rogers, the organization’s Country representative Mary Oigoro said women and girls need to feel more comfortable and comfortable about the whole process of menstruation and discuss it feely.

“Menstruation should be celebrated as a God given gift,” she said adding that it should not hinder girls from achieving their dreams.

Oigoro stated that breaking the silence and stigma around menstruation could be achieved through training and involvement of support personnel within schools and creation of menstrual hygiene management champions within the schools.
