Social media sites Facebook and Twitter have partnered to tackle the mushrooming fake news sites and improve the quality of information shared on the platforms.

Under the umbrella of First Draft Coalition, the two social sites said they were going to establish a code of online practice and also make an avenue for social media users to verify sites that are thought questionable.

The body formed in June 2015 in collaboration with Alphabet Inc's Google is scheduled to be officially launched before the end of October as confirmed by First Draft Coalition Managing Director Jenni Sargent.

The development comes at a time Facebook has been accused of accommodating and spreading fake stories to its 1.7-billion-a-month users.
