This is after power generators switched on more thermal plants to cover reduced generation from hydropower stations.

According to Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, this is due to a drop in water levels at hydro dams due to dry spells experienced in the country in recent months.

Keter says the government opted for the expensive thermal power generators instead of subjecting the country to power rationing.

This is due to low water levels at power generating dams such as Sondu Miriu and Seven Folks that has dropped by at least nine meters.

Electricity customers are expected to shoulder this with power tariffs increasing effective December 2016 and will remain high over at least the next three months.

This could spill into April or May if the long rains delay or poor rains are experienced.
