John Onkundi, one of the town service drivers along the Kisii-Menyinkwa pick and drop-points, accused the officers of bursting his car’s back wheel using spikes. This was on allegations that he defied their order to stop for a check.

“They signalled me to stop and as I was driving to roadside, they threw spikes and burst my back tyre. I wonder whether they cared about the passengers I had because their action could cause an accident,” Onkundi said.

The incident attracted other Matatu operators, motorists and the public who wanted to catch a glimpse of what was happening.

The motorists asked the government to relocate the officers or else take action against them.

“The Kisii ‘kanjos’ have inherited the habits of traffic police who collect bribes from matatus. If the government cannot relocate them, we will teach them a regrettable lesson,” a motorist shouted.

The officer who threw the spikes escaped death in the hands of the public and Matatu operators, before his senior and Probox Matatu owner agreed to replace the wheel.
