Nicholas Biwot, a former politician from Elgeyo-Marakwet, said that oil has been known to cause conflict.

He urged the government and drilling companies to engage locals to avoid conflicts and also give them job opportunities.

On his side, Keiyo South MP Jackson Kiptanui said a report should be made public over the environment effects of the drilling so that residents would not be affected negatively.

“How residents will benefit from the oil proceeds should be spelt out from the outset. As leaders, we are grateful for the discovery because it will change the livelihoods for the better if managed well,” Kiptanui said.

He further said that the constitution is clear on how residents should benefit from resources in their county.

Tullow Oil Company is contracted to conduct the oil drilling and exploration.
