Lari sub-county Deputy Commissioner Bernard Kinyua has warned parents and guardians who have not enrolled their children to school saying that they risk arrest and prosecution.

Speaking to journalists at his Lari office on Wednesday, Kinyua said many children who have reached the eligible age have not been enrolled in school.

He said parents and guardians are instead forcing the children to do manual jobs at the expense of giving them education.

“I have directed chiefs to ensure that children who have reached the required age are enrolled in school,” he said.

Kinyua said every child has a right to education and that anyone found denying their children education will be arrested.

He said cases of crime involving young children are on the rise, a situation he blamed on parents for not taking their children to school.

The commissioner said that the government has made primary education free and that parents have choice no choice but to enrol their kids to schools.

Kinyua noted the only way poverty will be fought is through education.

He also directed the sub-county education officials to conduct inspection and make sure that children in the area attend school.
