Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane has encouraged residents to enroll and contribute to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Korane says that residents stand to benefit if they register and contribute to the health scheme.
Speaking when he visited Garissa county referral hospital in Garissa on Thursday, the governor observed that 70 per cent of residents have not enrolled to any health insurance scheme.
He said that accessing quality medical care has been a problem for many residents. The Jubilee governor said that the NHIF shame has been structured to accommodate every citizen.
“I want to encourage residents to register with NHIF where they can be assured of quality medical-care,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
Governor Korane observed that the NHIF rates are cheap and accommodate every resident whether in public service, private sector or ordinary citizens.
The Governor noted that patients especially those suffering from non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure toil to get medical care.
He said that his government will work with NHIF to ensure locals are sensitized properly on the scheme. The governor also pledged to increase amount allocated to healthcare in efforts to bring services close to the people.
He also promised to set up modern health facilities, saying that provision of quality healthcare is among his top priorities.
