Kenya Correspondents Association chairman Oloo Janak has urged journalists to prioritize their safety when reporting the August 8 general election.
According to Janak, journalists should observe their professional code of conduct when executing their duties.
He said that the media will only help the country through accurate, factual, and balanced stories.
"To be safe, journalists should report accurately and give the accused a chance to reply to the allegations levied against them," Janak said as reported by Star.
He lamented that many journalists have got into trouble after accepting to be used to attack candidates or parties for political gains.
He argued that it is unfortunate that many journalists fail to report and provide details after they are attacked by hostile sources.
"Journalists should learn to report to us when harassed," he urged.
"It is sad that we have several instances where the victims of attacks are compromised to solve the matter locally", he added.
Janak advised journalists to be objective and treat sources with professionalism.
"Every practicing journalist should frequently revise the code of conduct so as to be safe," he said.
