A team of designers has come together to manufacture low-cost wheelchairs for people with disabilities.
The wheelchairs, called SafariSeats, are one of the most stable wheelchairs ever made and can climb over rough grounds.
SafariSeats can be manufactured in local workshops, using bicycle parts, hence cheap to assemble and maintain.
They allow people living with disabilities to live independent lives, through generating local and sustainable employment for survival.
In East Africa, one in 200 people live with disabilities and are in need of wheelchairs.
The social enterprise team is led by Janna Deeble, a former victim of disability.
In the last two years, he has assembled a team of designers in Kenya, in collaboration with local workshops and is determined to make a difference in the lives of people living with disabilities.
The initial units produced will be free, in a bid to encourage local workshops to make SafariSeats for the disabled in their communities.
The humanitarian team needs 30,000 pounds (Sh3.69 million) to kick start the project.
The team is calling upon Kenyans to support the initiative, through donations, to develop the open source toolkit and begin the manufacture with local workshops in Kenya to make as many SafariSeats as possible and to change lives.
