Students of Itiero Boys High School in Suneka, Kisii county razed down seven dormitories for being denied the chance to watch Euro games currently undergoing in France. There grievance of being denied the chance to watch football should not be the cause for razing down school property.
The introduction of entertainment in schools was primarily to ease the busy schedule students have to go throughout the week and time was dedicated to relaxation and leisure.
However, students have emerged to make the entertainment program a must have scheduled in school. Failure to engage in the program has led to students rioting and even destroying property worth millions in the process.
Teachers have failed to take precautionary measures to combat the increase in school riots. Students should be made to understand that entertainment programs are not a compulsory program in school.
They should take their studies more seriously than any other thing. Schools and all stakeholders should work together to ensure the students do not engage in further strikes due to lack of entertainment. The content being aired should also be regulated to ensure students are not radicalised by what they consume from the entertainment programs. The continued riots in schools are uncalled for and students should be taught the need to maintain peace in schools.
Teachers and stakeholders should also engage students in talks that will ensure there is a good rapport formed to ensure students agree to maintain order in schools.
The lack of entertainment programs should not be used as a scapegoat to violence in schools. Students should learn to engage in education rather than concentrating on entertainment that is just but a by the way.
If continued riots are witnessed just because of the lack of time for entertainment, then the program should be slashed out of school programs altogether and education given the first priority. Any students found to engage in riots should be faced with strict penalties that will help curb the violent acts.
