Environmentalists want the government to control the livestock roaming in Nakuru’s CBD and suburbs
They claimed that the illegal roaming of the livestock was dirtying the environment and creating a health risk in the area
Lead by the Mwarubbish Community Based Organization CEO David Ndegwa Klngori said that the irresponsibility of the owners was leading to total environmental degradation
He claimed that they spent a lot of money and resources planting trees and watering them till they reached a stable position, only to have this greenery to be destroyed by roaming animals.
“If you cannot control them sell or donate them to willing buyers. It’s unfair that people spent a lot of money trying to improve our environment only for a few reckless individuals to allow their animals to ruin it. The owners should contain them in their sheds,” Klngori added.
Environmentalist Emily Mwangi said that the presence of the animals was killing the organisation’s morale especially since they intended to start planting trees next month
“We had planted trees and flowers that were eaten up by the animals. In November 2014, despite minimal precipitation we planted trees and flowers that were eaten up by roaming livestock in town. It’s unfair that we invested our finances and are expected to tolerate such losses,” Mwangi said.
