Speaking to the press at Rift Valley Sports Club on Tuesday evening, the environmentalists claimed that the government was wasting good and arable land by converting them into dumping sites.

They cited the Gioto dumpsite, claiming it was located in a strategic place that could be turned to good use.

“We are appealing to the county government to convert the many quarries especially in Molo and Baruti into garbage dumping sites. After they are full they will be flattened and turned into arable land,” said Kio Kinuthia, one of the environmentalists.

Emily Kimani, another environmentalist, claimed that the garbage could be transformed into renewable energy.

“Research proves that if the garbage is kept in such quarries they will be able to tap methane gas which may be used into many industries,” Kimani said.

The claims come only a few days after governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s trip to Finland. The governor sought renewable energy options.

The meeting saw him partner with officers from Norcart in Finland to plan on proper waste disposal in the county.

“We are looking forward to creating better and more sustainable waste recycling in the county. This will solve the problem once and for all,” Mbugua said in a press release.
