French ambassador to Kenya Remi Marechaux has launched an ambitious Kisumu Urban Project financed by the Agence Francaise de Development at a cost of Sh4 billion. Marechaux said the project strives to improve commercial and urban infrastructure in the city like markets, bus parks, solid waste management, roads, street lights among others. He said capacity building component was added to transform Kisumu County. “Capacity building will equip the county officials with ideas on how best to run this city of Kisumu,” he said. Speaking in Kisumu when he launched a Sh100 million floodlight project, the ambassador said the French government was working closely with the national government for economic growth. “France is working closely with the government of Kenya and we will not stop to ensure the people of Kenya enjoy good life,” he said. Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma, who accompanied the ambassador, said the 23 floodlights will be erected in strategic areas to provide security. Ranguma said the floodlights were targeting low income areas and high security risks in the city of Kisumu. “Our people have been complaining of insecurity, putting up floodlights is one step to address the insecurity issue,” he said. Some of the areas that benefitted from the floodlight programme include Nyalenda, Manyatta, Obunga and Bandani slums among other areas. The governor said other centres bordering the city will be brought on board to benefit from the floodlights, noting that his aim is to support a 24-hour economy with better security.
