The National government has been urged to equip and staff the existing Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions instead of building more across the country.
According to the Chairman Kenya National Qualifications Authority Prof Bonaventure Kerre, establishing many TVET institutions will lower the quality of education offered due to lack of staff and equipment in the newly construct institutions."We should have few TVET institutions which are fully equipped rather having many that are understaffed and overstretched with facilities," Prof Kerre said in Eldoret town,Thursday."We want our students to get quality and not quantity education," he added.He however, advised parents to take their students to technical institutions since its the remedy to joblessness among the youths."We should refrain from the norm that technical institutions are meant for failures.Through this course students are equipped with skills and knowledge leading to self employment," noted Kerre The National government through the ministry of education has set aside sh 40 billion for the Construction of one technical training institution in every constituency.
