Prisoners from the Kisii GK Main Prison have appealed to the government to consider equipping schools within the prison’s facilities to enhance quality education for inmates aspiring to further their education while serving their jail terms.
In a memorandum read on their behalf by Andrew Moecha, during the tour of the facility by the Principal Secretary, Josephita Mukobe, the inmates expressed concern that despite some inmates' ambition to further their education while serving their prison sentences, the schools within the facilities lacked required equipment and teachers.
“Though some of us would want to continue with our education while serving prison sentences, schools within the prison facilities do not have the required equipment and teachers to take us through various subjects,” stated Moecha.
Moecha, who is a teacher by profession, challenged the government to engage services of trained teachers in the prisons to teach their peers while serving their jail terms instead of having them wasted as prisoners.
He said many inmates were willing to further their education while in jail, since being in jail did not mean the end of life for inmates serving short sentences.
