Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has accused Equity Bank chairman Peter Munga of trying to curtail his political career.

Iria said the Equity boss and other area businessmen have sponsored  his rival, Dr Moses Mwangi, to ensure that he is not elected to serve another term as the Murang'a county boss.

"My opponent is being pushed by my enemies who have been trying to bring down my government for the last four years I have been in the office," Iria claimed during a campaign rally in Kandara constituency.

Dr Moses, who is vying on Mzalendo Saba Saba Party, was initially seeking Jubilee Party ticket but withdrew his candidature before the primaries were held.

Iria defeated his closest rival Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau to clinch the coveted JP ticket.

The Governor said Munga is an 'enemy' of President Uhuru Kenyatta since he is sponsoring candidates of other parties to compete with those vying on the President's party.

“In Murang’a we want all elective seats to be won by Jubilee candidates since that’s the interest of the President,” Iria said.

The former KCC boss urged his rival to throw in the towel, promising to give him a job after August polls.

However, Dr Moses has declined the offer and denied allegations that he is being pushed by the business community to vie.

He castigated the Governor for spreading malicious allegations after sensing defeat.

"He has realised the people of Murang’a are ready to vote for another person. He is trying all means to pull me down but the people are behind me," Dr Moses said on Friday.
