The county scholarship selection board of Equity Bank’s ‘Wings to Fly’ has raised concern over disciplinary cases among students they are sponsoring under the program.
Speaking to the eight selected students and their parents during the flag off ceremony, Garissa Equity Bank Manager Stephen Kirumba said two students they have been sponsoring have dropped out school due to disciplinary cases.
Kirumba said they expect students under wings to fly program to uphold a high standard of discipline.
"I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity that you have been accorded, uphold hard work and dedication to your studies, because you are now in the higher league and more importantly so that you can proceed to higher education either at local or global leading universities like many of the wings to fly who have gone through the programme," Kirumba said.
Wings to fly program is an initiative of Equity bank group and the MasterCard Foundation with support from other partners including individuals and corporate organizations. It offers comprehensive secondary school scholarships to top-performing yet needy and vulnerable students from all over Kenya.
This year's scholars bring the total number of the scholars from the region to reach 169, through the opportunities.
A committee member and also a children's officer, Mohammed Abdi Hussein, echoed the branch manager's words saying that indiscipline among the beneficiaries would not be tolerated.
Mohammed said that parents should take full responsibility of advising and directing the students on the right things to do while they are at home since the bank has done everything else for better results at the end of the four years.
On his part Zachariah Abdurrahman, a beneficiary thanked Equity bank group wings to fly program, MasterCard Foundation and other partners for sponsoring them, encouraging others from the poor families not to give up.
