The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has published a list of 37 petrol stations allegedly found selling adulterated fuel to unsuspecting motorists.
The ERC said the stations failed to comply with its regulations, going further to close 25 out of the 37 stations for selling sub-standard fuel. However, 8 stations were reopened after their owners upgraded their product and paid taxes and penalties.
ERC said they took samples of 6,045 tests which were examined between the months of June and September.
The affected stations were found to be selling super petrol and diesel contaminated with kerosene while others were offering petroleum products locally which were meant for export.
One truck was impounded transiting diesel contaminated with kerosene while five depots stocked with the illegal fuel.
Mombasa County had the highest number of stations selling the illegal fuel, with six petrol stations there closed, though one was later reopened after it met the regulations.
The stations include Gateway Inn (Miritini), Bassawad (Kisauni), Eagle (Likoni), Liwatoni (Ganjoni)Al-Mursalat (Jomvu) and Swafaa (Kisauni)
Two fuel stations (Mwireri Investment filling station in Utawala and Realoil service station in Kayole) were closed in Nairobi.
