The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has said fuel tanker owners will soon be required to conduct real time tracking and monitoring of their fleet in planned regulations.
This is in efforts to curb the fuel adulteration malpractice that is a key challenge facing the petroleum sector.
Tanker owners will be held accountable if their trucks are caught transporting adulterated fuel or engaging in suspicious activities and will risk having their licenses suspended.
Fuel tankers will also be required to park at designated centralised and well-secured locations in order to enhance safety.
ERC said it will explore various technological interventions that will play a significant role in preventing and controlling fuel adulteration in the country.
This was discussed during a consultative meeting between ERC and the Petroleum Institute of East Africa (PIEA) board members that was held on Monday morning.
