Gilgil MP Mathenge Nderitu wants more bumps to be erected along the Nakuru highway to reduce the number of pedestrians involved in accidents.
Addressing journalists at Gilgil town on Sunday, the MP raised concerns over the high number of pedestrians being knocked down especially at Gilgil town.
He said that erecting bumps will help curb the accidents, which have since claimed at least six people and left others injured in the last two months.
“The government, through the Kenya National Highways Authority should come in and erect more bumps to reduce the number of these accidents,” said Nderitu.
Nderitu said that school going children are the more affected, stating that there is need for motorists to adhere to the law.
The MP further called on the traffic commandant in the area to crackdown on rogue motorists who he accused of over speeding, adding that traffic police should be more vigil this festive season, so as to reduce the number of accidents.
The lawmaker asked the government to revoke licenses of motorists who flout traffic rules, saying that the move will instill discipline among road users.
Over the weekend, a section of Gilgil town locals demonstrated over the rising number of accidents along the Gilgil-Nakuru road.
“Cases of pedestrians being killed on this highway are high, the government should deal with the situation and ensure sanity is brought back on the road,” said Kamau Muyia, a vendor along the highway.
Nakuru highway has been named among killer roads across the world, with accidents experienced mostly during the festivity season.
