Traders in the market accused Kisii County government of giving a deaf ear to the concerns they raised over the poor drainage in the market.

“We will incur losses after the closure of the market because our fresh produce from our farms such as tomatoes, oranges, mangoes, bananas among others will rot in stores,” said Erick Bwari, a trader.

Bwari added that over 8,000 Luo and Kisii Community have been rendered jobless.

Euniah Nyamache, a tomato vendor urged Governor James Ongwae to intervene to upgrade the market for the traders to resume work.

“Ongwae should act immediately to ensure hygienic in the market is improved, construction of good drainage patterns to allow free flow of flooding rain waters in the market during this rainy season. The market lacks water, toilets,” she said.

She added that traders will not risk their lives to continue doing their businesses in dirty conditions.

“We don’t want to be infected by cholera. We have given Kisii County government until Monday next week to open the market failure to which we will protest,” she said.
