Speaking to HiviSasa.com, the factory’s chairman, Christopher Nyakora, confirmed indefinite closure of the tea buying centre till key outstanding issues were solved amicably.

Mr Nyakora confirmed summoning of the buying centre’s chairman, Peter Okero and his secretary,  Zachary Obiri over the allegations, besides calling for farmers representative to bring the claims officially on Thursday to the factory headquarters in Nyansiongo.

“The secretary and chairman have been summoned by the management following chaos that erupted as farmers complained of intimidation and irregular distribution of fertilisers that were given by the factory. We also call upon famers to bring their petition for proceedings,” he said.

However, the accused officials defended themselves from the allegation and accused a section of ‘greedy’ farmers for inciting other farmers for selfish gains.

“First, let me sincerely apologise for what had happened because it’s unnecessary for us to close the buying centre because of issues that can be solved. It is just a section of individuals whom we defeated in polls who are trying to incite peaceful farmers,” Mr Okero said.

They also urged the factory’s management to constitute a mediation committee that will bring the two factions together for the sake of farmers.

“It will be important if the factory comes with the committee to help us solve the outstanding issues. As the incumbent committee, we are ready,” he added.
