The residents say that hiring university staff based on ethnicity has been the root cause of all problems facing higher learning.

“We condemn in the most words the unfair recruitment and promotion of universities staffs on tribal lines,” said James Makau , a Nakuru resident.

The Commission for Universities has come under fierce attack from the public over allegations of hiring universities staffs on ethnicity. The question of tribalism at the universities has also drawn scathing reaction from the Parliamentary Committee on Education .

Speaking today at Nakuru Town, residents said that the university regulator should act in the faith of Kenyans, and expressed concern over commission for practicing tribalism.

“The agency should be guided by patriotism and nationalism in its appointment and employment of staffs in public universities. Kenyan education at higher learning should reflect a true picture of patriotism,” said William Owiti a Nakuru -based lawyer.

According to the public universities ethnic audit report conducted on 68 Kenyan universities and their constituent colleges, the issue of tribalism has roots at the higher institution of education.

However there is hope to contain the issue after the chairman of the Commission for Universities, Professor Thairu pleaded to form a committee to look into the issue of tribalism.
