Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro has been accused of allegedly failing to honour Standing Orders of the house during Thursday’s stormy special sitting.
Ethuro had summoned the special sitting to allow Legal Committee table a report on the controversial amendments of the election laws.
And Machakos senator Johnston Muthama sensationally claimed that the speaker allowed nominated senator Hosea Ochwang’i to vote despite the bell having rung for a while.
“The speaker knew all these plans and was even forced to breach standing orders. I have never seen an instance where doors remain open five minutes after the bell has rung,” he said.
Muthama added: “He knew that Ochwang’i was not in the house and had gone to collect a letter sent to him by Senator Chris Obure. That is where the real rigging in the Senate took place.”
Ochwang’i, a Jubilee senator who rarely speaks on the floor of the house, voted on behalf of Kisii Senator Chris Obure, who had initially delegated his voting rights to ODM Senator Janet Ong’era.
