The Chief Observer of the EU Marietje Schaake, has presented the EU EOM final report on 2017 Kenyan general election and the repeat presidential repeat poll.
Speaking on 10th January in Brussels while presenting the mission report, Mrs. Schaake reported that the elections brought a lot of disappointments together with many confrontations.
“The general elections and later fresh presidential election brought many disappointments and confrontations,” she said.
During the launch of the mission’s final report, Mrs. Schaake urged Kenyan leaders and international partners to prioritize issues that includes, rule of law, separation of power, respect to independent institutions and the rights and freedom of Kenyan people.
During the presentation, the EU Chief Observer also noted that the Kenyan government was not prepared to receive the mission.
She also included 29 recommendations for improving future elections. Among of them being inclusive legal reforms, strengthening IEBC and review of the electoral system to improve inclusivity and women’s participation in politics.
“We hope the recommendations in our final report will contribute to more resilient democracy from which all Kenyans benefit. This takes time to build up, which is why it is important that steps are taken promptly to improve the legal framework, institutions and practices,” she concluded.
