Kisumu County is set to benefit from a Sh81.6 Million European Union funded project aimed at improving maternal and child health, reproductive health and nutrition.

The activities will focus on the informal settlements in Manyatta and Nyalenda.

Speaking to the press at Prosperity House in Kisumu, EU head of social affairs and environment Dr Hjordis Ogendo said that the project will be implemented in three years.

"The project objective will improve maternal and child health, sexual reproductive health, family planning and nutrition of communities living in Kisumu slums," said Dr Ogendo.

She added: "The project will ensure targeted population are aware and utilize quality maternal and child health, nutrition, sexual reproduction health and family planning services."

Dr Ogendo said the EU will work with Kisumu County to enable projects activities reach the targeted populations through the established health care systems.

"We will establish eight-function community units and provide them with basic tools to enable them mobilise the community for service," she said.

She said that the project will focus on the current guidelines on maternal health, family planning and nutrition.

Care Kenya Assistant Country Director Programmes Rosemary Mbaluka said that the project will help in reducing maternal and infant deaths.

"The project will prevent unintended pregnancies in adolescent girls that risk early pregnancies," said Mbaluka.

She said the project will address social barriers regarding supporting maternal health.
