The European Union (EU), Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ray, has issued a statement, over the political development in the country, as IEBC plans to conduct fresh presidential elections on October 26.

Below is the statement, issued, Monday, October 16.

"The European Union is closely following developments in the Republic of Kenya, ahead of the re-run of the presidential election, which is scheduled for October 26th.Following the Supreme Court ruling annulling the 8 August 2017 presidential election, it is crucial that all political actors respect the independence of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in the organization of the re-run. All parties should seriously engage with the IEBC in a dialogue about processes and procedures, and support its work as it prepares for the new election. As stated by the Chairperson of the African Union, with only a few days remaining until the 26th October, actions and declarations against the IEBC could have an adverse effect on its ability to fulfil its Constitutional mandate. Unreasonable demands, threats of boycott or attempts to change electoral regulation are to be avoided. The European Union is committed to continue supporting the advancement of democratic governance in Kenya and to provide assistance to the IEBC.Catherine RaySpokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy."
