Meru Governor Peter Munya and his Bomet counterpart Isaac Rutto poise a real challenge to reelection of President Uhuru Kenyatta according to secret NIS report.
The two dumped Jubilee parry for PNU and Chama Cha Mashinani respectively last year and they are seeking reelection in their counties.
Although it is not clear who Munya supports for presidency, Rutto has since joined forces with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
A source close to Jubilee party campaigns reveals for the first time that Kenyatta has already sent emissaries to the two leaders in a move aimed at persuading them to support him.
“A report indicates that Munya and Rutto will be easily be reelected despite their tough stand on government. They are being received well in the ground and this is our concern,” said the source.
“They are a threat to the president’s reelection and awe has tried to reach them to come with a compromise.”
While Munya will be facing Meru senator Kiraitu Murungi, Rutto will have a tough task against National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso.
Both leaders have exuded confidence that they will beat their competitors in August elections, an affair that will see Odinga battling out with Kenyatta.
