Former councillors who worked under the local authorities in the municipal council in Kisii County have called on the national government to also pay them for retirement as is the case with MPs. Speaking in Itibo where they held a meeting to discuss the issue, Gwaro Makori, a former councillor said they have been neglected even after the government vowed to pay each one of them Sh1 million. “We did a great job as councillors but the national government has forgotten us, we seem not to exist to them,” he said. He called on the county MPs and the senator to take forward their plea and follow it up to see that they are helped. The councillors said they did a very good job during their time and the government should appreciate them. They also called on the county government to ensure that all contractors that municipal council had hired are paid their arrears, noting that the money that was to do so was in the 2012/2013 budget that went to the Transition Authority. “The money went to the Transition Authority and did not pay the budgets for that year and remained as arrears and if the money has not been cleared, I want ask Governor [James] Ongwae to have a suplemntary budget to help pay the arrears weleft,” said Gwaro.
