Kisumu's first ever female Mayor Grace Akinyi has urged women in the country to take up leadership positions.
“It is time women in this country also fight to get these leadership positions,” said Akinyi while addressing the public at the Jomo Kenyatta sports ground in Kisumu.
She expressed concern over the laxity of women to fight for elective posts like their male counterparts.
“Women should stop this idea of waiting to be nominated into elective posts. They should stand up and also offer a stiff competition to their male counterparts,” she said.
She added that during her time in office, she managed to launch a strong campaign that enabled her to be elected the first ever female Mayor of Kisumu.
“It is saddening to note that only a few women always turn up to seek elective posts and this trend needs to change,” she said.
She also urged women to take advantage of the laws that are embedded in the constitution and seek top leadership positions.
She also encouraged women to embrace education in order to increase their chances of getting top jobs not only in elective posts but also in other sectors in the country.
