Octogenarian politician Simon Nyachae is still critical but at least stable in a London hospital, a close family friend has said.

Last week, Nyachae was flown to London after a short stint at Nairobi Hospital in what family members say was mild 'chest pains'.

Although his illness remains a closely guarded secret, a family member who sought anonymity said the former powerful minister has not yet improved.

"Mzee was flown to London for specialised treatment and hopefully all will be well soon. I know he is still under ICU," said the source.

His eldest son, Charles Nyachae, had refused to give further details to the media last week, only to state that the former Ford People leader was still under medication.

"He suffered from chest pain and all is being taken care of. For now, he is still in the hospital and I hope he shall recover soonest," he said.

While his illness has left confusions across Kisii and Nyamira Counties, local politicians are working around the clock to cement unity talks that would see formation of a single political party.

Since 2002 when Nyachae was on ballot, the Gusii community has been voting in patches will political elites treating the populous voting base as tossup in all subsequent elections.
