Three Japanese naval ships with over 750 officers docked at the Mombasa Port early Monday morning in what has been seen as a boost to tourism in the region
Under the command of R/Admiral Hidetoshi Iwasaki, the officers will be anchoring in Mombasa till Thursday when they leave for Sri Lanka.
Mr Iwasaki said that more than 200 new officers will be travelling to Nairobi later Monday to have an overnight feel of the city while the rest will stay in Mombasa.
The voyage began in May and Iwasaki's charges have been to countries with perceived good ties with Tokyo in order to gain marine knowledge and interact with naval forces of other countries.
Kenya Coast Tourism Association chairman Mohamed Hersi welcomed the Japanese and expressed optimism that the contigent was a boost to tourism in both Mombasa and Nairobi.
Hersi also said that more cruise ships were scheduled to bring other tourists to the coastal city between November and December this year.
