Kibera Law Courts on Wednesday handed over the project site to the contractor who shall begin expanding the courts to increase its capacity to hold many hearings at the same time.

The one year project was awarded to Havi Construction LTD and is scheduled to begin its work on April 27 this year.

The handing over ceremony took place in the courts presided over by the Chief Magistrate Anne Awinjo alongside other judges.

According to the courts' executive officer, Rickson Shikuku, the project is estimated to cost sh137, 649,133.60 with Kibera residents targeted as the key beneficiaries of the employment opportunities that will be available at the site.

"We have given the constructor an okay to start the construction and expansion of the courts so as to increase the number of rooms from four to at least 15. We want to increase our capacity by ensuring that we offer services to many citizens within a short period. We have agreed with the contractor to allocate 30-percent of opportunities to local residents either as suppliers or casuals," said Shikuku.
