[NewsDay Kenya]The government through Health Ministry has now made it a must that expectant mothers seeking to benefit from the free maternity programme, to register with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).A notice from the NHIF warned that those who fail to register will henceforth be paying cash whenever they seek for delivery services public hospitals."Since we are handling the programme, it is appropriate for expectant mothers to register with the fund,” said NHIF CEO Geoffrey Mwangi.“When you are a contributor, you stand to benefit from many other packages and that includes the mother’s dependant. But with the Linda Mama programme, it’s only the mother and the child who benefit for six months,” he added.According to him, registering did not mean that one should remit the required Sh500 monthly.Kenyatta National Hospital issued a circular, dated December 22, asking staff not to attend to expectant mothers who are not registered with the Linda Mama NHIF programme unless they are registered with NHIF or unless they agree to pay for the services offered.
