Speaking to the press in Athi River, the Director General of African Centre for Security and Strategic Studies Simiyu Werunga said the community policing concept had completely been politicised.

Werunga argued that the ‘Nyumba Kumi Initiative’ term which according to him was mostly used by politicians had outweighed the community policing concept and its intended objectives

He said the concept that had been narrowed to ‘Nyumba Kumi’ was to be ‘Usalama Wa Msingi’, what he alleged that the politicians did not know.

The expert said the initiative had worked in many countries across Africa and globally expressing confidence that if positively embraced and implemented in Kenya, the initiative would improve the country’s security.

He however faulted the media of keeping a low profile in highlighting the initiative. He accused the media of only publishing and broadcasting mild stories on the initiative as expressed by politicians and provincial administrators who did not understand the concept.

Werunga called on the politicians to support the initiative and the media to give it another approach to avert the current situation and status security in the country.
