A strategy devised by Deputy President William Ruto to unite Gusii community under one party has reportedly backfired.

To cement the strategy, the DP had sanctioned all elected leaders to meet last weekend before an impending elders meeting this month.

But infighting and divergent interests among local leaders rendered the unity talks 'an imagination' thus need to go back to the drawing board.

"He had facilitated MPs to meet but it seems a number of them are not happy after his decision to oppose unity talks between Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta," said a source.

The source added: "A number of MPs are also opposed to the idea of imposing Fred Matiang'i as their de facto leader."

Also, the opposition on the idea by ex-Kitutu Masaba MP and Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati is said to have played an integral role.

In the plan, Matiang'i was set to be elevated as Kisii spokesman, a position currently claimed by ODM's Simba Arati.
