Kisii Governor James Ongwae has called on leading mobile operator Safaricom, to scale up their corporate social responsibility initiatives in counties.
Governor Ongwae said Safaricom as a leading giant in the telecommunications industry should invest more in the counties in areas of health and education.
He asked the Safaricom Foundation to partner with his government to improve healthcare.
“We ask the company to partner with counties in development so that we can reap fruits of devolution. However, we appreciate for your corporate social responsibility but challenge you to invest more in education and health,” said the governor.
Kisii County is setting up a Sh2 billion cancer centre that is going to be the third biggest in Kenya, after Kenyatta National Hospital and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospitals.
Ongwae who was accompanied by his Deputy Joash Maangi, was speaking on Saturday at the celebrations of the 15 years of Safaricom operations in Kenya at the Kisii Safaricom Care Centre.
Regional Head of Safaricom for Nyanza and Western Mr George Ndhiwa said the mobile operator will see areas of partnership with Kisii County to improve service delivery.
